Can trucks be zero emission vehicle like passenger cars?
We already see zero-emission rigid trucks for urban delivery. But how about articulated tractor? Among articulated tractor, we can differentiate three different categories trailers for regional delivery, long haul and construction respectively.
For both rigid trucks and articulated tractor. when the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) towards battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles
(FCEVs) ?
To answer this question, Transport & Environment (T&E) and Agora Verkehrswende commissioned the independent research organisation Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), to make a report assesses the techno-economic feasibility and market uptake potential of zero-emission trucks for the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) over the timeframe 2020 – 2040.
This TNO report finds:
- BEVs are expected to be the most cost-effective option for all of the included vehicle types. FCEVs only become the most cost-effective technology from 2030 onwards for a very limited share of the fleet (drive very large distances) and only in a small number of countries.
- for urban delivery trucks, the ZEV uptake potential is very high already today. The ZEV uptake potential of regional delivery trucks will increase rapidly to 90% by mid decade. Both urban and regional delivery trucks will reach virtually 100% by 2030.
Along side the two T&E persons, Lucien Mathieu as France Director and Marie Chéron as Vehicles Policy Manager who animated the discussion, three guests brought their respective input in this October 13th 2022 online round table exchange.
- Ms Virginie Guérin, Vice-Présidente des affaires publiques, Géodis.
- Mr. Jean-Philippe Hermine, Coordinateur de l’initiative Mobilité en Transition, IDDRI
- Mr. Marc Lejeune, Business Intelligence Director, Renault Trucks.
I learned from their exchange that
- Battery and recharge technology advance very rapid, and as experience show, it is difficult to predict what is possible two years later.
- The industrial actors are waiting for more ambitious and predictable government’s supporting policy for infrastructure and purchase towards BEV trucks.
- The Geodis + Renault partnership aims to commercialise in 2023 the battery electric trucks with the same total cost of ownership (TCO) than diesel ones.
- Established in July 2022 by Daimler Trucks, Volvo et Traton, CV Charging Europe aims to build and manage reliable and secure high-performance charging solutions, to accelerate the transition to zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles in Europe.
